Synovial Plica

Previous | Next

What is it? A synovial plica is a redundant fold of synovium found in the periphery of the joint, often along the medial side of the patellofemoral joint.

How does it present? May present as an intermittent or chronic pain over the area of the plica with repetitive knee activities. Occasionally a popping or catching sensation may be appreciated. It may also be exacerbated by direct trauma to the area.

Common exam findings: A thickened band of synovium may be palpated and is often tender.

Tests and treatment: No routine tests needed. A conservative approach with icing, modification of activity and rehabilitation may be helpful. Surgical removal of the plica can be considered.
