Practice of Relaxation Response

Previous | Next

The RR technique involves two main components:

1) Repetition of a word, sound, or prayer that is selected by each individual to provide a focus for the mind to dwell; and

2) Maintenance of a passive non-judgmental attitude towards the intrusion of thoughts.

Benson recommends that the RR once learned should occur for 10 to 20 minutes a day, but not within two hours after any meal, since the digestive processes may interfere with elicitation of the Relaxation Response. A quiet environment and motivation to set aside the time everyday is required in order for a patient to experience the benefits of relaxation from this practice.
