Lateral Process of Talus Fracture

Previous | Next

What is it: A fracture of the lateral process of the talus is generally an extra-articular fracture of the talus.

How does it present: Patients may present after ankle twisting injury with pain and swelling over the lateral ankle.

Common exam findings: The exam may show tenderness over the lateral ankle region and swelling.

Tests and treatment: Ankle x-rays are necessary to evaluate for this fracture. Large or displaced or intra-articular fractures should be referred to orthopedics. Other fractures may be treated with immobilization with splinting and casting for about four weeks. Due to risks of avascular necrosis, malunion and post-traumatic arthritis, fractures of the main head, neck, or body of talus should be referred to orthopedics.
