Draw Up Proper Amount of Lidocaine

If you have already determined the safe total amount for the infant, this section may be skipped by more experienced operators.

Use non-sterile gloves
Use sterile alcohol swabs to wipe the rubber top of the lidocaine bottle
Uncap the needle
Pull back on the plunger to either 80 (0.8mL) or 100 (1mL) units
Sterilely inject the drawn up air into the bottle and then pull back on the plunger to draw up the lidocaine solution to beyond the desired amount
Keep the needle in the bottle and eliminate any excess air by injecting it into the bottle
Adjust and draw up the desired amount of solution (0.8 or 1mL)
Remove the syringe from the lidocaine bottle and recap the needle or, if not, be careful to avoid puncture or contamination of the needle as you prepare the penis for injection; See next bullet point
