Protein Quality

Previous | Next

Our bodies make proteins from amino acids obtained by digesting dietary proteins. Essential amino acids are those that the body cannot make and must, therefore, be provided by the diet. Traditionally, protein "quality" was rated as complete or incomplete. Complete dietary proteins provide all essential amino acids. Proteins from animal sources (meat, dairy, and eggs) are complete proteins. Incomplete proteins (typically plant-based) contain inadequate amounts of one or more essential amino acids. However, incomplete proteins should not be considered inferior to complete proteins. Plant-based proteins provide other important nutrients, such as fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. A well-balanced diet with multiple sources of plant-based proteins can provide all required amino acids.
