Physical Activity

"Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness."

-Edward Stanley, Earl of Derby 1873

Physical activity is a critical part of any treatment plan for those at risk of developing diabetes, as well as for those who have already developed the disease. The effectiveness of physical activity equals or exceeds that associated with pharmacotherapy for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. However, it can prove difficult to initiate, requiring greater provider supervision at the onset than traditional medicinal regimens. If successful, though, the long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term costs. We will review:

  • Physical Activity vs. Exercise

  • Evidence

  • Recommendations

  • Prescription

  • Follow Up
