Deep Venous Thrombosis

What is it? Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot within the deep venous system of the leg.

How does it present? The patient will often present with a tender, swollen, warm calf, and pain in the posterior calf or thigh.

Common exam findings: Exam will often show calf swelling, usually one to two centimeters greater than the opposite side. Posterior calf tenderness, erythema and warmth may be present as well. There may be a positive Homan's Sign.

Tests and treatment: A lower extremity Doppler ultrasound is needed to evaluate for a DVT.
