Kohler’s Disease (Osteochondrosis of the Navicular Bone)

What is it: Kohler's disease is avascular necrosis of the navicular bone. The cause is unknown.

How does it present: This disorder presents most commonly in boys between ages four and nine, and presents with pain and swelling and may cause limping.

Common exam findings: Exam may reveal tenderness over the navicular bone.

Tests and treatment: Diagnosis is made by foot x-rays. Treatment is generally conservative and may involve a period of immobilization.
