One explanation for the increasing burden of disease from depression may be found in a 2008 "special article" in the New England Journal of Medicine. In that article, Turner, et al., revealed disturbing levels of publication bias in the reporting of antidepressant clinical trial outcomes such that the true effect of antidepressant medication efficacy may be overstated by up to one-third leading to "adverse consequences for researchers, study participants, health care professionals, and patients."
