Antecedentes
Las FDI (más conocidas internacionalmente por su acrónimo en inglés, IDF) se fundan formalmente mediante un reglamento aprobado el 26 de mayo de 1948 (Reglamento del Ejército de Defensa de Israel) por el gobierno provisional de Israel, firmado por el entonces entonces Primer Ministro israelí, Ben Gurión, y publicado en la Gazeta Ofical nº 3 del 31 de mayo siguiente, compuesto de ejércitos de tierra, mar y aire, y en el cuál se establece el reclutamiento forzoso y la prohibición de cualquier otro grupo armado.
Inicialmente, integra a los componentes de su antecesor, el Haganá (ההגנ, Defensa), fundado en 1920, que era la organización paramilitar judía en Palestina durante el período del Mandato Británico (1920-1948).
A su vez, el predecesor del Haganá fue el Hashomer (השומר, El Vigilante), establecido en 1909 para proteger los asentamientos judíos, y el de éste, el Bar-Giora (בַּר גִּיּוֹרָא), fundado poco antes, en 1907, y que estaba formado por unos pocos judíos inmigrantes con el mismo fin que el Hashomer.

Over the past few months, much of Israel’s top security brass has stepped down—the chief of staff (Gabi Ashkenazi), the head of military intelligence (Amos Yadlin), the head of the Mossad (Meir Dagan), and the head of the Shin Bet or internal security (Yuval Diskin).
It’s no accident. True, the MI chief’s term had run out; but the chief of staff and the head of the Mossad had wanted to stay on for another year. As for the head of the Shin Bet, he wanted to get a new post as head of the Mossad—and was passed up.
Why the palace putsch? According to a slew of media reports, confirmed this week by a major columnist, the issue is Iran. These four men’s superiors—Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak—are said to have a hawkish disposition toward Iran’s nuclear program. The four are said to have a more dovish disposition—at least when it comes to a direct Israeli aerial attack on the program (ex-Mossad chief Dagan indeed stunned many by coming out openly and strongly against such a move).
Israel's defense chiefs failed in deterring Iran (Aluf Benn, June 29, 2011) - Ex-Mossad head, Meir Dagan, and ex-Chief of Staff, Gabi Ashkenazi, appear to claim they helped rescue Israel from a destructive war with Iran, perhaps the truth is that defemse establishment failed to fulfill the instructions of political leaders.
