SOL ACTIVITY SUMMARY:

1. Successful exploration during EVA2 led by XO Emmy Jewell. Crew members investigated the fossilized oyster bed, and gathered materials for a Mars analog Christmas tree. Crew Engineer Chiara Cocchiara helped Emmy get out of a depression she slid down into. All three crew members returned unharmed and triumphantly built the tree outside the engineering airlock using extra material that was present outside the Hab.

2. Crew discussion about last wishes on Mars brought up many important and valuable ideas on the treatment of one’s body, how one’s loved ones should be notified, and what the crew members hoped their legacies would be.

3. Crew brainstormed and discussed ways to celebrate the holidays while away from home and to stage their own predicative rendition of what the new Star Wars movie will be like. Crew Journalist Anna Ialeggio mentioned that a similar dramatic production is a tradition at McMurdo Station following the first play put on by Shackelton and his crew.

Look Ahead Plan:

1. How are you going to follow up?

1. We will study the lichens brought back on EVA1 under our dissecting scope and will look for tardigrades. We will also look at how these samples show up under the Chi detector.

2. The members of EVA2 will add more to the Christmas tree.

3. The new EVA suit will be tested on several crew members to see how it compares to the current suits.

2. What is the plan for tomorrow?

1. SOL 3 will see the NorCal rover remotely operated during EVA2. The efficacy of rover resupply in the field will be tested.

2. EVA2 will be led by Commander Nicholas Jewell and joined by HSO James Giammona and Astroengineer Barak Stoltz. This will be James’s and Barak’s first EVA.

Anomalies and any problems in work:

None

Weather: Snow mostly melted. Partly overcast. No wind. Around freezing. A pleasant day for EVA.

Crew Physical Status: Everyone remains in excellent health and high spirits.

HSO reports the small bump is healing. Another crew member developed a heel blister during EVA which is being treated.

EVA: where did you go?

After engineering check, EVA made a large loop starting West to see the fossilized oyster bed, and then swinging down south before returning to the Hab.
