Purpose:

The purpose of this EVA is to find points where extra-terrestrial life could exist. These points were selected by Japanese kids, based on meteorological and topographical prediction. EVA route is RS005 via ATV, return to HAB, proceed via foot to RS004, then RS006.

Narrative:

On each site, the crew will make careful observation and survey natural features of the area around the points in more detail. We use a photogrammetry system for topographical field survey; it is composed of a single-lens reflex camera, a tripod, and a spherical panoramic tripod head, and takes at least 8 photos in each of the selected-points. We count up plants and animals in a 1x1 square meter, and also take samples of soil for IVA.

The EVA started with an engineering check by Victor Luo. Yusuke Murakami and Susan Jewell checked the ATVs and strapped the gear on them.

We completed observations on RS005 and RS004 as we planned.

But unexpected trouble occurred on the way to RS006. The air-conditioning fan on Victor's EVA suit suddenly stopped. Yusuke decided to give up continuing EVA instantly, and headed back to the Hab. There was a 15 minute walk to the Hab. Victor had ample oxygen inside his EVA suit until the Hab. We calmly walked without any issues and made it safely back.
