Purpose:

A simulated medical injury which invokes a head to toe assessment and subsequent evacuation of a person from the field back to the hab.

Narrative:

Kai and Sue Ann took one ATV each down the road, only far enough to be out of eye site from the hab. Sue Ann then lay at the bottom of an embankment, acting as though her lower right leg were broken (this leads into the tele-surgery which was conducted two nights earlier).

Kai radioed for assistance, to which Ash and Susan responded, arriving on foot.

Kai conducted a head to toe assessment (as defined by the Wilderness First Responder methods) given the confines of the helmet and suit.

It was concluded that Sue Ann was unable, of her own accord, to return to the Hab. Therefore, Kai and Ash conducted a chair-carry to the nearest ATV. This was for demonstration purposes only, as the ATVs are not fitted with the capacity to carry a 2nd person.

This EVA was a success in that the limitations and very real challenges of managing a wound in the field, in the confines of a space suit, were presented. In essence, it was impossible to determine, with full accuracy, to determine if Sue Ann had a head or spinal injury. However, given the mode of injury, full sensation in all of her extremities but the one below the broken leg, and ability to respond to a series of questions, we determined it was safe and best practice to return her to the Hab immediately.

Purpose:

Sample collection and Scouting

Narrative:

EVA 2 was carried out towards the North-East of the Hab. Srivastava and Musilova walked over to a near-by location to find samples. Musilova collected few test samples and scouted the area for future sample collection.
