Eva Date:

Time Slot:

Purpose:

Pre EVA expectations:

1. Visit alluvial fan 1 km northeast of the Hab

2. Collect geological samples from alluvial fan

3. Conduct SSLP experiment at alluvial fan

4. Visit Tank Wash to collect rock samples and look for meteorites

Narrative:

The EVA team departed the Hab airlock at 1010. Ian went about his daily engineering checks of refilling the Hab's water tank, checking fuel levels for the generator, and checking the propane tank. Meanwhile, the rest of the EVA team packed gear onto the ATV's.

The EVA team departed the Hab around 1035 and arrived at the alluvial fan about 5 minutes later. Sampling for the SSLP experiment commenced promptly and was completed successfully. Paul Knightly collected an additional sample from the hand auger while the rest of the team searched for biological and geological samples of interest and looked for meteorites.

The EVA team departed the alluvial fan around 1130 and began driving to Tank Wash. After falling out of radio contact with the Hab, it was necessary to establish a relay point while Ian and Claude-Michel collected biological samples. The EVA team did not make it to Tank Wash as it was deep into a canyon and would have certainly been out of convenient radio range with the Hab. New communication procedures will be discussed before the next EVA to help make longer distance EVA's safer.
