Jorge Mirez – Commander
My full name is Jorge Luis MIREZ TARRILLO and I was born on February 23, 1975 in Chota, Peru. I currently live in Lima, Peru. I have an M.S. degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, and I’m currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Physics (thesis: Control, Optimization and Management of Microgrid Current Direct) at the National University of Engineering (UNI), in Lima. Since 2011, I work as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Sciences at UNI (Courses: Control Theory, Heat Transfer and Electromagnetism) and as an engineer supporting the Biomedical Office at ‘Cayetano Heredia’ National Hospital in Lima. My subjects of interest are applied mathematics & computational science, electrical engineering, and biological & artificial systems. I have experience in Matlab/Simulink, biomedical equipment, electrical systems and saturated steam systems. I am motivated to gain more knowledge in the area of human space exploration. I also want to achieve the ability to lead research groups, and exchange knowledge and experiences with other researches and undergraduates and graduate students. I hope my experience at MDRS motivates other students and teachers in Peru.
Frank Vilchez – Executive Officer (XO)

Franko Vilchez Marcos is a Peruvian student in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP). Mr. Vilchez has worked in various industries, including the food, mining and construction industries. He worked in Alicorp, second largest Andean consumer goods company, and Komatsu-Mitsui Maquinarias Perú, an official distributor of the Komatsu brand of heavy machinery and the Cummnis brand of power generation equipment and gasoline engines in Peru. In 2013, Franko served as President of Industrial Engineering Students and Graduates Association of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (ADEIN). Franko has also participated in different conferences, such as the National Congress of Industrial Engineering. He is currently working on his graduate thesis which describes how discrete event simulation is used to improve a food production process.
Diego Guillén (Peruvian, 21 years old) is currently a Mechatronics Engineering student at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He has participated in many national robotic contests and he is currently part of a research group at his university. As an exchange student at the Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, he was awarded with a full scholarship of excellence by the Austrian project “Innovatives Oberösterreich 2010 PLUS”. He thinks that mobile robotics is one of the most interesting topics for research. He believes that a robot should be used in places where it could be too hazardous for a humans and wherever it is required to have mobile assistance. Robots need to be equipped with many different kinds of sensors and have volume and power supply limitations. He practices various sports and enjoys going to the gym.
Ruth Quispe – Health Safety Officer (HSO) / Geologist
Ruth Quispe was born on March 12, 1992 in Lima, Peru. She graduated first in her high school class in 2008, and then began studies at the Faculty of Science at the Agraria la Molina National University. She studies biology and is interested in molecular genetics and evolution. She participated for seven years in a religious program that teaches values to children who were going to make their first communion. Ruth enjoys photography and has won the ‘Breathe Life’ competition, which is organized by the Ministry of Health of Peru. Her goal is to become an astrobiologist and is currently a member of ‘Grupo Astrobiologia Peru.’ She enjoys astrobiology because it deals with the origin, evolution, limits, and future of life. She has participated in promoting astrobiology studies in Peru through symposiums, lectures and pamphlets about this scientific discipline. With her experience in at MDRS, she wants to be an example and inspiration for many young Peruvians. She has an active participation in science, and has been one of the winners in the contest ¨Innovative projects¨ organized by her university in 2013. In her spare time she enjoys running, drawing, reading and taking photos. Adolfo Ubidia – Greenhab / Biologist
Luciana Tenorio – Journalist / EVA Engineer
Adolfo Ubidia is a biologist from Federico Villarreal National University and a member of the first astrobiology organization in Peru. He has always been interested in space sciences and wishes to one day work as an astrobiologist in space. He has participated in the ‘2nd Mexican Astrobiology School’ in August 2013. He also has a great interest in plants, their care and development. At his University he was in charge of the construction of a habitat for carnivorous plants; and in arts, especially music, he loves playing the violin and he has been studying violin interpretation at the National Music Conservatory of Peru.
Luciana has a Bachelor degree in Architecture from Ricardo Palma University (Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism) in Lima, Peru. Luciana understands the importance of architecture to future space habitats and colonies. She is interested in housing developments in extraterrestrial surfaces and would want to help to design space habitats for Mars. In 2011, Luciana traveled to Spain as an exchange student at the Polytechnic University of Madrid where she studied at the ‘Superior Technical Architecture School of Madrid’ (ETSAM). She has also participated in Architecture competitions. In 2012, she designed the ’Aurora Borealis Artic Observatory’ located in Rovaniemi, Finland, as part of the Archimedium competition, which deals with academic architecture, design and city planning. In 2013, she had the opportunity of working at Torafu Architects in Tokyo Japan. Given that ‘space’ is one of the major factors in a very limited cosmopolitan city like Tokyo, her job was to ensure ‘habitability’ for people by creating spaces according to the needs of the user. In Lima, Peru she has worked with engineers and architects in building offices. She also teaches ‘Technical drawing for architecture’ at the Technological Institute of Superior Education ‘TOULOUSE Lautrec’ in Lima Peru.
