How To Use Google Keyword Planner To Generate Content Ideas

There are various tools out there that are used for keyword research.

However, most of them are premium tools – meaning, you have to pay a subscription in order to use them.

But what if you're on a shoestring budget & you don't have any money to spend on tools?

That's where you need a free tool like Google Keyword Planner.

Most people aren't aware of this, but Google offers a free tool that helps digital marketers with keyword research.

And the beauty part is that, it pulls data straight from Google's own database – meaning, its data is more reliable in nature – unlike other tools which pulls data from secondary sources.

Thus, you definitely need to leverage this free tool – since it helps to cut-off unnecessary costs to your business.

But how can you get started with Google Keyword Planner?

In order to get started with this tool, simply go to ads.google.com & create an account.

Now you might be wondering, why do you need to create an Ad account?

The reason is that, this tool was designed for people who want to run ads on either Google or YouTube.

Thus, it's hosted under the Ads platform of Google.

But don't worry – because you wont have to launch an Ad or spend some money in order to use this tool.

You're just creating an Ad account so that you can get access to this free tool – SIMPLE!

Once you've created an Ad account, you'll get access to this tool.

Simply come up with a list of seed keywords related to your niche i.e. the type of keywords which are common in your niche.

Once you've a handful of them, simply plug them inside the tool – and run the test.

The tool will pull data from Google – and it will give you some metrics related to search volumes i.e. the average number of people that are searching for that keyword per month.

It also shows you the difficulty levels of each keyword i.e. low (less competitive), high (highly competitive).

Try to choose keywords with a decent search volume (100 or more), and a low difficulty score – so that you can easily rank for those keywords whilst getting some decent amount of traffic at the same time.

Just a pro tip;

Don't be fooled by keywords with high search volumes but high competition levels – because no matter how hard you try, you wont be able to get a portion of that traffic – because you wont be able to rank for them.

Also, don't be fooled by less competitive keywords with little to no traffic – because even if you rank for those keywords, you wont get any traffic to your site – because no one is searching for that kind of staff.

So it's important to find a sweat spot of decent search volume & low competition levels – so as to yield better results for your efforts.

Once you've found some keywords that are worth going after, it's now time to create content.

But before you start writing, it's important to do a search analysis for those keywords i.e. manually search them on Google & analyse the top ranking pages.

You need to take note of their content length, content type, content angle, etc. – so that you'll know exactly how to structure your content.

This is so important because if you skip this stage, you might end up creating ‘thin' content that's less competitive to the top ranking articles – thus, you wont be able to rank.
