Christmas Sugar Cookies - Viola Lincolnhol

Ingredients

Cookies:

2 C sugar

1 C shortening

2 eggs

1 cup sour cream

1 tsp salt

1 T vanilla

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp soda

4 1/2 C flour

Vanilla Butter Frosting

3 C powdered sugar

1/2 C butter softened

1 1/2 tsp vanilla

about 2 T milk

Procedure

Cream the sugar and shortening then add the eggs and sour cream and vanilla. Mix all well then add the mixed dry ingredients. Dough will be thick.

Roll out a portion on a lightly floured surface. Use floured cookie cutters to make desired shapes. Place cookies on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350-375 until very lightly golden brown around the edges maybe 8-10 minutes. Remove cookies from the cookie sheet and let cool. Frost the cookies after they have completely cooled with vanilla butter frosting and decorate as desired. Cookies can also be sprinkled with coconut.

Special Notes

This is the Grandma Viola Lincolnhol Christmas cookie recipe. I have Grandma's Betty Crocker Cookbook and she had written this recipe in the back of the book. She had made notes on who liked coconut sprinkled on top of the cookies. As a child my mother used to sprinkle coconut on the top of the cookies too.

I made a batch and a half and it made about 70 good sized thick cookies. I made a double batch of the frosting to frost the 70 cookies and there was just a little left over. Whenever there was left over frosting as a child we used to spread it on graham crackers and make a little frosting sandwich.
