Lebkucken

Ingredients

1/2 C shortening melted

4 1/2 C brown sugar

1 pint honey

1 pint molasses

1 pint sour cream

5 C nut meats

5 lbs flour

5 eggs slightly beaten

1/4 lb raisins (more than this!)

2T cinnamon

1 T nutmeg

3 tsp salt

4 tsp soda

2 tsp all spice

1 T cloves

Procedure

Melt shortening and add sugar, honey, molasses, sour cream, and eggs. Mix spices with flour and add fruit. Add fruit and flour to wet ingredients mixing in as much as possible to make a stiff dough. Chill and let stand overnight. Roll to 1/4 inch thick and cut into rectangles. Bake at 350 degrees for 9-10 minutes. Makes about 25 dozen.

Recipe from Grandma Gengler. The dough is very difficult to stir!! Marian Klco passed this recipe to me soon after Bill and I married. I made them every year from then on. Grandpa McKenna use to really enjoy these too. We once found a tin of these in the basement that was about a year old. They were still in perfect condition - -maybe a touch dry. The original recipe calls for citron fruit - -yuck! I usually add more raisins instead.
