Chapter 198

Ch 198 Adam's Eve                                               hanging ten & more

Adam Karwiel is embarking on the journey of his life; some might call it the eve of destruction or an early bucket list. I took this picture in the spring of 2002 of the twin, my teammate, as we prepared to hit the ice for a practice at Albany Co. They say this one is actually Ryan the older twin by 5 seconds, but what's the difference; this story is about Adam. You see I hired his Dad, Tony, in 1978 and if I hadn't saved Tony's life on a Buffalo winter survey when he broke through the ice and was nearly swept away, there would be no  Adam (or Ryan or whoever).

Adam just turned 21 and I recently gave him his first (???) beer as he shared a few of his life stories that you will find quite interesting and be amazed at what you have missed in life. There has been some feedback that I need to spice up my boring old stories a little, I wont mention names.

The twins (funny how they are usually together) both worked part time washing dishes at Christie's Bellini Restaurant. After prep school and various travel hockey teams they are both Seniors at the University of Rhode Island where they ran on the track team throughout the northeast. Electing to take some studies abroad in Europe, Adam's already hit Spain and Portugal. Right now he is back in Albany, but don't blink. He just came back from taking studies in Australia where he lived out the theme from one of my favorite movies in college, the Endless Summer; traveled by RV, surfing and looking for that perfect wave. His travels also took him to New Zealand and Fiji.

It's best to jump right to the movie and be there at the first ever screening of the bungy jump. Feel the joy of the candid unscripted, uncensored, and unaware commentary of the adventurer. Be shocked like the startled Dad, aghast at what is transpiring in front of his eyes. All this while the unknowing Mom slumbers away upstairs blissfully resting for the next day's duty shift,  totally unaware of the dangers and intrigue her kids have been up to a world away from home.Enjoy the death defying bungy jumping, sky diving, surfing, scuba diving with reef sharks, fighting off deadly brown snakes and red back spiders while desert walking, sand boarding, rock climbing, kart racing, and various exploits.

The bungy jump in Queensland, New Zealand at AJ Hackett's was the one Uncle Dick grandson did in Ch 41. As Adam tries his hand at tightrope walking, note the arch of the Sydney Harbor bridge that 87 yr old Uncle Dick did walk across the top of, as well as traveled to Fiji.

The rhetorical question, needing no answer nor even to be stated is: What have you done lately? ............damn kids
