Chapter 45

The Ice Effect

dust to dust, ice to water

Two drives on ice this week. Major storm no problem for a professional driver.

Ice has been our family's friend for generations. Grandpa Hayden shown on right guiding ice saw harvest of blocks with Arnold Timmerman or Don Terrell at the pond out back in 1942. He owned a 1937 Reo 3 Ton farm stake truck. They stocked them in the ice house between the back porch and the milk house at Philo Olmsted's (Van Gorder's) just past the hand pump well. Insulated with sawdust, they would last all summer & cool the milk on their dairy farm.

Don Terrell's memoirs contain many references to the "Olmstead's". Hayden had a contract to produce 100 railroad ties from his sawmill. Hayden fell from his silo and broke his wrist. Bullfrog hunting at pond to eat. Driving the jitterbugs with Dale.

Apples falls near the apple tree. Ice and the melted form has been important to fam. Dad was a major fisherman. I made a career of analyzing and protecting it. Shawn's career revolves around the boating industry.

1979 Dad, Grandpa (2 wks prior death), Shawn & me (credits sister). Dad on his '49 Harley with Grandpa's barn in background. Dad's auto mechanics & welding. Dad archery on same ice pond practicing on frogs before moving up to carp in Tioughnioga River. My auto mechanics. Shawn's auto mechanics. Nephew coach Scott (also a professional driver- DHL) named his son Hayden. Can you believe anyone would have the courage to do that? Good form.

My hockey team dipped to 4th, now back up to tie for 3rd with Seth Gordon (horns) joining team. He was 4th in scoring in Capital District High school 4 years ago http://www.cdhshl.org/leaders00.htm those crazy Chinese hackers? . Note that one of top freshmen in nation Peter Mac Arthur of Boston University was way down at 23rd on the list. Mark Nirsberger lower left was 11th but was Captain of Shen & won suburban council championship  http://www.cdhshl.org/photos00.htm .Goalie works at Rensselaer Honda. Another defenseman was at my Acura dealership. Guess I'm oldest in the league, still learning.
