Going Tactical

high tech survival

Last chapter was a throwback to old school hiking methods. This time I give a nod to new technology. You gotta have multiple backups and alternate options when risking your life in the outback. The high voltage plasma coil technology uses provides 900 degree heat in a 60 mile per hour wind and down to below zero. Finally willing to show my switchblade after quizzing an ECO policeman I ran into. He first said it was a deadly weapon and illegal, but I explained I found Penal Law Section 265.20 part 6 exemptions: use during hunting, trapping or fishing with a valid DEC license. He called the main office and they agreed with me. He said I'm good to go. My senior lifetime fishing license will really come in handy now. I have several switchblades brought back from Germany and South Carolina that will come into service.

It took a few days to research some 10,000 LED Tac lights before I could pull the trigger on a Nitecore to backup my LED headlamp. They have awesome capabilities as tactical equipment for law enforcement. I ended up with a unit capable of illuminating 30days and reaching out over 200 yards - yet it only weighs a couple ounces for an easy carry.

Finally got a foot of snow to enjoy the show shoes with. It looks peaceful looking back, but it was a struggle.

Outdoor conditions can be quite changeable and extreme. There was a lot of wind on that day taking windchill to near zero. Tested some new winter layered clothing. On the mountaintops is where you face a real challenge.

We prepped on a small hike at our local Usher State Forest just a few minutes from home.

Risk takers were in abundance with the recent Rivers Casino grand opening in Schenectady. I took a chance on photographing a few cops without being hassled.

It was quite exciting and I plunked down one minimum $10 bet to be rewarded with a $30 payout. Cashed in immediately. Took some photos before the security told me you can't photograph the table? Hoping I wont be put in jail?

I remember a time when things were simpler. Glad those days are past.
