On Hiatus

a kayak moment - the good old days

I've been on hiatus for a while, kind of a pause to refresh.

It's the silence between the notes that makes the music. If it were all sound it would just be a jumble of noise. Colleen (my German Stein collector) took a moment out of her hectic and time consuming Nurse's schedule to stop and smell the roses. Let her use my second kayak for the trip to Round Lake. "So peaceful", she said as we enjoyed the sunny and not too cold late November day. Thank God for global warming: kayaks would have been stored otherwise.

If continuously busy working - doing chores - maintaining, etc. you might end up just rushing through life and not taking the time to enjoy the moment. When a special moment presents itself - go with the flow. Appreciate it - feel it. Don't let it pass you by.

Ran into a guy this week at the Y from my camera club. Mentioned my kayak excursion and he said, "Yeah, when I retired I was thinking of getting a kayak." Don't be that guy. Don't think, but Do. Listen to your heart.

It's all simple common sense, but sometimes I have to remind myself.

We have added Carly Simon's 1971 song "Anticipation" to our playlist. "We can never know about the days to come, But we think about them anyway."

It goes on...

"And tomorrow we might not be together

I'm no prophet and I don't know nature's ways

So I'll try and see into your eyes right now

And stay right here 'cause these are the good old days."

I've always believed in that passage. Back in 1971, and likewise also today. In other words, don't be hung up trying to figure out your future and then try to live out those expectations. Just take it day by day and live in the present moment.

We took such a moment to make a gingerbread house with Lucas. It wasn't really about the gingerbread house, as you can see, the roof fell in, but that wasn't the point. It was more about looking into his eyes, and I'll remember it as one of the good old days.

During another moment, we took a little Christmas Victorian Stroll on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. It was just a brief few minutes but it was still a time to remember. At least I'll have the photo to help me recall.

Who could have known that this would be my last Danzer's German meal on a trip to the SU- Clemson football game. They closed up December 23 with the owner in ill health. I couldn't have predicted the Saint George Turkey Trot 2 years ago was the beginning of my hip replacement ordeal. Didn't know I'd be cooking another free Veterans Turkey for Thanksgiving. Didn't know global warming would let me kayak right into December and experience a two eagle attack on some schools of fish. Or that there would even be Eagles in the neighborhood. Yes, these are the good old days.

The Conservationist Magazine used my Osprey from Chapter 384 in their on line edition Sept 9.
