Exile

under house arrest

In second week of recovery from artificial prothesis hip implant surgery. I'd call it making great progress but with a few hiccups.

Lucas came down to visit and he enjoyed doing a few laps around the house in the walker till he got bored. He wouldn't eat the apple pie I made but did enjoy the ice cream. He likes picking up the cover of Grandma's glass hen to see what's inside.

I only used the walker really once on the way home from the hospital. We stopped at an ice cream stand so I used it to get to a picnic table. I had an argument with one of the physical therapists at the hospital when she said I was beyond the walker stage and a cane would be more appropriate. I wanted a walker knowing I'd only pay $25 of the $135 cost via insurance. Just thought it would be a useful efficient device to have available for whatever future malady I might transpire. Finally, they gave in to my request - although she was right, the cane is more suitable. Now I just carry it for security walking equally on two feet.

The most difficult thing I do is to put on my compression stockings each day. Should have bought the sock aid device prior but neglected to. After getting home one morning I drove to 5 different drug stores looking for the device to no avail. Probably at a specialty health supply store but I made do modifying this sneaker.

I'm reminded of breaking Aunt Carol out of the hospital after her hip surgery for breakfast at Denny's. She sent me back to retrieve her arm sling and I brought out the funny looking sock aid instead. She just laughed and said forget it.

People ask me what else is new? Huh. Tony asked me to go out to a nightclub and I said, "I might look normal but I am not normal." I said it's swollen and feels like I have a vice grip attached to the top of my femur. He empathized on a visit wearing a vice grip attached to his dungarees. That's just what it feels like.

To sit in a recliner and slide my heel toward me 40 times is a chore. Want to push to the limits but don't want to loosen the prosthesis that is simply press fit into the femur. Keep reminding myself it takes 6 weeks for the bone to bond to the devices.

Lucas came back for a visit and surprise what I found in the basement. He chose to stop the aorta bleeding on his turn.
