The moment we arrived at the Appenzell Motel just outside the park a herd of Elk came rambling through. This young bull was about to bolt across the highway knowing he had to make a quick crossing. Then he lunged across bringing traffic to a stop as he joined the herd.

Inside the park we took the Trail Ridge Road to this great landscape. The road was closed due to snow removal past the Rainbow Curve but we drove as far as we could.

We had a lunch break one day and left the park for the nearby village of Estes Park and fantastic Dave's BBQ. Walked down to a fishing pond and saw this sight across the river. The beautiful big bulls were nonchalant as they munched on grass leaves and twigs in someone's backyard.

They were very contented.

On the second and last day there we stopped at Bear Lake. It was the nicest lake we saw in the park. The park attendant advised me I could use the speed lane with my pass. I had seen several people going in the far lane using a card to swipe the machine where a gate would raise up. Had assumed it was for workers. Now I know.
