Ch 217B Great Grandpa Philo

something old, something new

I don't remember my first Great Grandpa Philo Burritt Olmsted (1858-1946) who died when I was almost 2. This is the original Olmsted farmhouse (later Van Gorder's)where Carol and Dad were born. This pic prior to electrical connection, in fact PB said he didn't want it, didn't need it. Coal stove in living room and of course large wood stove in kitchen. It was 8 pm bed time for all in the winters, 9pm in the summers you could set your clock to it. Arise for the 4am milking (by hand). Aunt Carol enjoyed going to the barn for evening milking with the warmth of the cows, sit on the sacks of feed and pet the cats. Gr Grandma Sarah Suzanne Zickefoose Olmsted (1857- 1938) here in 50th wedding anniversary fur coat died before PB but he had previously suffered incapacitating stokes (her dish). He then had to move in across the street to Hayden's home for a few years before passing on. He was a quiet and gentle man who enjoyed listening to Amos and Andy on the radio. Carol remembers him on the shoe maker bench and pedal grindstone (I'd guess the same ones I used behind our garage). You put a can of water on top to drip down for lubricant.
