Terry's Journey in Retirement

Chapter 580

Pompano Remembered

ex post facto

I don't like to gloat about the places we've visited, or maybe actually I do. Gave just one brief chapter to last years visit of Pompano, Florida and it deserved more, was just too over whelmed. We had to postphone this years annual visit until the fall so it's a good time to recall at least for me.

We took a late flight so that we could fly non stop this time. Even though we lost some beach hours it is much better than the hassle with those connecting flights. Magical coming into the Fort Lauderdale Airport at sunset with the city lights. I can feel it.

In retrospect when I look at other youtube videos on the area that are very nice and all, yet it's worth noting that the beach here in front of Colleen's place is SO quiet as well as being beautiful. It's an important point because there are many beautiful beaches that are so crowded (like the top ranked ones) that I'd not enjoy them.

The sunrise into our apartment is often beautiful. I suppose it's redundant but , damn. I can feel it.

Sometimes after putting in many miles on the beach we reward ourselves washing off the sand and soothing the muscles in the hot tub. It's just across the street in the other part of the complex but open to us. Can you feel it?

We stopped into the just built Boat House a couple times. Didn't fully capture the feeling here because it is so vast. There's a bar and dining room behind us with great music playing with the ocean breeze. Couples are in the various booths. I can't describe it you have to be there to feel it.

Hillsborough Lighthouse and Inlet is a very photogenic spot. Many drone videos. It's a few miles walk up the beach. A few of the mansions don't like the walkers on their beach fronts - too bad, it's public space.

As previously mentioned we got to experience a feeding frenzy by a group of Brown Pelicans in this Inlet. This guy was looking for the little fish below and keeping an eye on me.

We got into Briny Irish Pub a couple times looking for last years friends. Surprised we didn't find them but enjoyed a brief visit anyway. We were leery of spending too much time in closed quarters and noticed the bar tender had a ready bottle of hand sanitizer next to the cash register.

Got up to Del Ray Beach on one occasion an hour north. It was a very windy day with waves crashing.

There's a lot of warmth to look back on during that week yet with the tragedy of the virus that ballooned and dominated world events in 2020.

It's pretty historic on this one year anniversary when covid began with the first death recorded in New York and I got my first dose of the vaccine today. My quoted Harvard prof prediction of 50 million deaths worldwide was too high with a far lower current total of  2.5 million. Yet the US has suffered a disporportionately high toll of 500,000 deceased nearing the severity of the Spanish Flu's 675,000.
