Terry's Journey in Retirement

Chapter 599

Port of Albany

interstate commerce

Last chapter spurred me to delve deeper into the subject of shipping, use my fun Maritime Traffic app and giving me a reason to drone. This Vancouverborg ship is a beautiful new contaniner/cargo version shipping under the flag of Netherlands and recently came here from Sweden.

Watched it unloading cargo boxes of unknown goods. Later caught it underweigh down at the Port of Coeymans on its way to Phily.

Was happy to get a tug in the mix. The Janice Ann Reinauer is based in NYC and had come up with a load of petroleum from the World Fair port in Queens.

Launched from the Rensselaer side of the Hudson River. Behind me is Empire Power and Sprague Power, and Rensselaer Iron & Steel works salvaging scrap iron.

Using my maritime app I figured I could intercept a tug down river at Coeymans. Missed the one I had anticipated but was lucky to get the Janice Ann now presumably empty heading back down river. Last seen heading past Montauk.

I moved down to the Coeymans Town Park for this shot. As I got up to 200 feet elevation I was completely in the fog.

Also lucky to have the Vancouverborg coming down river. The manager of the Coeymans Port came up to advise me not to drone from their private property. I had walked to their perimeter gazebo that seemed to be built for the public. Explained I was primarily there to photograph the ship and they allowed me to finish that mission but they are so paranoid about flyovers. Which are legal anyway and they are aware there is plenty on youtube. Nevertheless, I acted in an unthreatening manner.

There is such a wealth of data from the app and so quickly, very impressive.

Stumbled on the really well done video on the top 10 Container Ports in the US.

The cruise ship, American Constitution lower left readies to set sail back down to NY. $5,000 per person is the lowest rate for the 7 night tour. We happened to share a lunch table the day before in Bennington, VT with a German/American couple I believe on this tour.

Had launched on the Rensselaer side until the vacant BASF lot security person asked me to not to park on their driveway so I just drove 5 feet away on the shoulder of the road. She was also the remediation wastewater treatment plant operator so we had a little chit chat, no problem.

We took just a little hike on the Appalachain Trail (looking for brian) and wanted to buy a bottle of the blueberry liquor at the Vermont Distillery but the leaf peepers were clogging up Wilmington so it was a quick turnaround.
