Catskill Village

drums along the Hudson

Catskill Creek enters the Hudson here at Wanatonka Island foreground. Rountop Mountain in Catskills background. The consensus of historians is that Henry Hudson stopped by this island twice in September of 1609.  Encounters with natives ranged from friendly to murder.

“as a very good people...and when they supposed that I would not stay overnight with them for fear of their bows, they broke the bows and arrows and threw them into the fire” Hudson Log Book

The^'ye  a7id  iioentieth  was  faire  weather,  and  the  wind  at

Felt a part of history, almost expecting Henry Hudson to come up from the south into port.

I had awakened early so scooted down the Thruway for early morning drone shots when the colors are better.

Noticed a Bald Eagle looking for a breakfast on the other side of Catskill Creek. Wondering if he is a decendant of the eagles that greeted explorer Hudson four hundred years ago.

Visited the Thomas Cole National Historic Site, his 5 acre homestead with this original old studio. I opted out of the  $16 plus required mask entry fee. Cole was the founder of the Hudson River School of Art in the 1800s and mentored Fredrick Church.

I trekked across the Hudson River on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge part of the 6 mile round trip art Skywalk between Thomas Cole house and Fredrick Church's Olana estate. Very cool - no, too hot at 90 degrees. But with the wind it did feel cool. 1923 Bridge very pleasant and stable, 150 feet up from water. Have been to Olana, thought it was hodge podgy.

Purpose of trip to meet up with college buddy Pete who lives nearby and I had met him here when we discussed his Vietnam adventures. Met him after the war when he managed a Stewarts ice cream shop on at the upper end of this Main Street. This photo 1971 Kingston just after I left Army.

Did I mention Iron Mike Tyson trained to become Heavyweight Champion of the world here.
