Olmsted Independence Day

Virgil Reunion

Family get-together sponsored by Kathy. People came from miles around. A little tenting, a little fishing, a little nothing. Somebody has got to cut Barb off of the Welches Grape Wine (product), going to her head.

I identify with the Amish. Although I'm not Amish my grandparents lived without electricity, running water, or indoor plumbing in the early days. Grandpa told me of reading by candle light and sleeping on shucked pea shells. So, on the way to central NY I dropped off this nice early twentieth century Disston & Stanley miter saw box to Mark Stutzman on Hinds Road in Springfield near Richfield Springs. From Columbia, Kentucky 11 years ago his wife and several kids make a living from the land: dairy cows, selling baked goods, jam and quilts on Fri and Sat. Have stopped there a few ties. He preferred to not have his picture taken but let me photo his buggies.

[Ohio's Naomi Stutzman was married for years to Jeremiah Raber of the Breaking Amish TV show. The family names are few but with large numbers inter-related. ]

I'm sure everyone remembers my 1965 picture of trout fishing in Virgil Creek from last week's chapter (no?). Well, Scotty and Hayden and I made a fishing trip there next to the old Dairy farm I used to work at. The farmer has been retired to a "home" and the property just resold. A little break and entry violation allowed for some interior photos, no harm done.

Virgil is way ahead of the times having a telephone in the village square. You don't need no stinking cell phone in this modern villa.
