The Hungry Trout

West Branch Ausable River

The West Branch Ausable River in the Adirondacks is a beautiful renowned trout stream, artificial lures only catch and release section for Brown and Rainbow Trout. This is the scene if you are eating at the Hungry Trout Restaurant.

This swamp is in the background of the above photo. During dinner we were waiting for the low sundown light to hit it just right. Too early no contrast definition, too late no contrast definition. We've taken the flume hiking trail just in front which ends up at the Whiteface Ski center parking lots.

Whiteface Mountain is the fifth highest peak in New York. It's a prominent feature in the Lake Placid area. This view I think is my favorite from a couple miles east of Wilimington going toward Jay.

This Hungry Trout Fine Dining Restaurant has the Mc Dougall's Pub in the downstairs. We ate at each facility- very terrific. Everyone raves about the trout but having grown up on a trout stream and having many trout meals, that was not my desire. We hit the outdoor eating patios behind and brought our own pre dinner cocktails (local craft beers) in the back yard watching the river (top photo). The fly fishermen entertained us as well as the tourists clamoring all over the rocks. Our Hungry Trout Resort motel is behind as well as their Orvis Fly shop offering hand tied flies, fishing instructions, and guide services. Whiteface in the background was a view we had from our room.

Hungry Trout overview video more than a restaurant - it's a lifestyle

This view from McDougalls Pub deck one evening as we chomped down on some Buffalo Chipolte Maple Wings. Didn't get consent from anyone, will I be arrested?

Across the road it was just a short walk down to the river. This pool was very special. The guy from Williamsville here caught a dozen foot long rainbows the day prior.

He was pretty excited about that and shared a picture from his cell phone.

Colleen was official photographer here since I have a lifetime fishing license. Did not score, but it was kind of irrelevant.

It was quite exciting to ride up the Swiss made gondolas to the top of Little Whiteface.

Having skied the mountain maybe a dozen or so times it was nostalgic to be back up there and see some of the slopes I used to be able to traverse. If my (non artificial) hip hadn't been acting up would have loved to climb up that slope on the left up to the top of Whiteface where the weather observatory is.

Whatever we do it seems to work out. Tried for the Lake Placid boat tour- fail- covid cutbacks caused sell outs. Attempted to drive up Whiteface Memorial Highway- abort- they wouldn't let you hike to the tip top- covid. Weather was great for the Labor Day Holiday. Hotels booked, distancing and masks predominated.
