P.L.A.N. group snowshoe or boot mile winter hike to save the Spruce Mountain Fire Tower from destruction by the powers that be. This organization does good work for the public good, battling government agencies as they proceed. When I worked in public service for 4 decades, I tried to be a representative "for the people". There has been a movement to remove fire towers and other structures in the Adirondacks. I like the towers for the views and as a reminder of a time when diligent and hard working rangers (like the ones I once knew) manned the structures.
Thirty or so volunteers, staff, & interested parties participated on a nice 32 degree day (not the 30 below of a week ago, yikes). Everyone was in good humor and proceeded up and down at their own pace without incident. Tower negotiations are ongoing and now open Oct 8, 2015.
