chapter 447

Sailing with Vikings

bucket list #48

The beautiful thing about the mission of retirement (should you choose to accept it) is you never know what the day will bring [box of chocolates theory]. After reading the morning paper (if over 60 you know what that is), I suddenly realized I had the chance of a lifetime to interact with a 1000 years of history. The world's largest Viking longboat was to pass through my sphere of influence.

The girl guiding the rudder was helping steer the boat starboard. They were under diesel power since they couldn't re-attach the mast until reaching Albany. A screw in my paddle holds my cam on timer mode.

Re-adjusting this portside fender that seemed to be too low dragging the vessel left will help in navigation.

The Draken Harald Harfagre web site is extensive and documents their journey from Norway across the Atlantic

recreating Leif Erikson's journey 1000 years ago when the Norwegians explored North America. The Draken continued on the St. Lawrence through the Great Lakes and back through NY along the Erie Canal heading toward NYC and Mystic Connecticut.

This video of crossing the Labrador Sea will give you a sense of the adventure. It's a lot like The feeling of getting into a kayak.
