Some of these oxbows go around more than 360 degrees and when traveling by kayak you don't know which branch to take. Down at water level things look different as you lose your perspective. With windy conditions you don't always know which way the flow goes either. At high flow, some new channels are cut or lead to dead ends. By bike (like in swap driving) , it's usually an easier proposition to follow the road. This Rte 10 segment has very low car traffic and wide smooth shoulders (6 feet).

 

Just downstream is a "takeout point" as the ADK mountain clubbers like to say.
