King Azes II

35BC-12BC King Azes II
35BC-12BC King Azes II

Imagine my excitement to buy this coin that Jesus may have had jingling in his pockets. Perhaps it was pay for a little kitchen cabinet remodeling job or maybe it fell off the money changers tables into his robe and he "forgot" to give it back. It is a 35BC-5AD  King Azes II silver drachma from the Indo-Scythian Empire. That's the Empire in the India Pakistan Afghanistan area, that preceded my Bull and Horseman coin (note the horseman similarity).

When they say "We 3 Kings of Orient are...", this is one of "The Kings of the East, the Wisemen" riding to visit baby Jesus.

Some "Occupy Wallstreeters" feel Christ like in resurrecting this age old message and probably wouldn't want to see me honoring this money.

My Drachm = Diameter 15mm, 2 gr., Didrachm double size, tetradrachm four times larger. Many variations.

Dan's example from 0 AD matches mine best.

Azes I tetradrachm beautiful example of very similar design: almost "jha" in kartosthi to right of horse

The Ancient Resource web site has many similar coins that cost too much. I'm in the cheapo bracket and I had to out snipe the bidding competition but my coin was authenticated. You skeptics may be non-believers if you will, I have faith.

This link to a larger tetradrachm has similar design with King in battle armour holding whip left and victory wreath right, snake in the path and Greek lettering, Zeus  (sometimes Athena) right holding spear and shield left and holding winged Nike (swift warrior 200 years before Jesus) right while making Buddhist hand gestures . Her God serpent Erichthonius may be along side with Buddhist good luck symbol triratna flanked with mintmarks monograms and Indian script . Coin is bi-lingual with the front in Greek lettering like their predecessors of the Indo - Greek Empire (Bactrian) and Aramaic alpabet on reverse.
