Chapter 48-28
Bombed directly ahead of the front lines near Aachen, and all three divisions hit similar targets in the fight to cross the Sigfried Line. Took off in very bad weather but the infantry had been waiting for us 6 days now, and we had to go. Went in on GH, leading the 448th BG. Dropped fragmentation bombs. Bad weather on return, diverted to Lisset, northern England. Easy mission.
Have now received from eBayer in this area a beautiful depiction of a catherdral or muenster.
On this same day in the Pacific theater of operations a B24 on a mission to bomb targets of opportunity over Borneo was shot down by Japanese flak guns. Seven crewmen eventually survived for 6 months being harbored by the Wild Men of Boreo, the Dayak headhunters. The Dayak hid the crew, while the searching Japanese soldiers were killed and their heads smoked.
Stealth blowgun poison dart technology was employed along with the only known bamboo runway used to fly the Americans out. Dad was schedulled to head for the Pacific Theater after the next few missions.
