chapter 304

Wild Life (in Virgil)

dinner with a porn star

First, I must apologize to Ana Potovic here for you guys jumping to conclusions. Yes Sis, Bro and I did enjoy an evening of her raucous devil music played in the church (the now Homer Center for Arts.) But our dinner with the porn star turned District Attorney was earlier in the evening at Commandos Restaurant in Cortland. I told you this was the wild life chapter. In keeping with my policy of accurate reporting, I must say that Mr Suben was not actually at our own table but a couple tables over.

Ana is from Serbia/ Yugoslavia but I believe she picked up some band mates from Memphis and France?

The weekend started out with Bald Eagle spotting half way down to Virgil at East Springfield, Otsego County. Was trundling along the secondary State Route 20 when I saw this huge bird feeding on a dead calf or some such thing out in the farmers field and had to stop. He took off several hundred yards away accounting for my poor quality pine tree top photo. I'd just this week heard Peter Nye, retired DEC Wildlife expert's talk at the bird club meeting summarizing his Bald Eagle program. Basically, he single handedly has re-established in NY about several hundred nesting pairs now from what was about one pair from several decades ago. I know I've claimed to have done this myself, but I did have a hand in it, and at any rate am really happy to see so many birds around the State now.

Speaking of wildlife, Sis and I did a bunch of snowshoeing down at this Lime Hollow Nature Center. This Visitor Center is the former home of high school buddy Bob Hammer whose on my current emailing list. His Dad was in the US Dept of Fish and WILDLIFE at the time the property was a fish hatchery. I can never forget his advice to me and Bob. "Don't work for the Government." which we both proceeded to ignore. If you look hard you can see the knife scratching on the stairway and bannister  "Olmsted slept here". It's a poor quality shot thru the glass but included for nostalgic sake.

Speaking of shot/ glass, a quick stop at Cortland Beer Company was noteworthy. For a buck I got 12 shots of all their tasty brew varieties. Definitely worth a stop. Stayed overnight at Sis house (my photo cup gift).

The actual official reason for the trip was to visit for Mom's 89th birthday, here eating a little birthday cake I brought down. She was in good spirits this day. Another resident there asked if I was Dale's son. Mrs. Alan (Elizabeth Heffron) Lash was in Dad's graduating class at Virgil. She's till very sharp. I played on a YMCA championship Cortland Tavern basketball team with her son and Larry Lash in 1967.

A quick stop in for coffee with old chums Tom & Linda Saltsman to see his THIRD NEW GENERATION MUSTANG. This is one WILD dude: a 2012 red 6 speed GT with 425 horsepower and leather ! and I thought I was indulging with my truck.

Couldn't believe my eyes in Amish country of Springfield, an Amish Hockey game near sundown 19 degrees outside. There was both a mens game and a woman's game (complete with black dresses). Zooming in, I notice they all had the modern high priced molded brand name hockey skates on. These Amish ARE Wild. And interestingly, what are the "English' kids doing? videogames?
