chapter 327

High Chaparral

9/1/2013

joy ride

Took the opportunity for this joy ride on beautiful Lake George with my dirt excavator family to end the summer. This is out of my comfort zone as I'm more accustom to shooting snap shots of dirt piles like I did at his construction site last spring. Nevertheless, I forced myself to enjoy the moment. The Dirt Jr. guy had been poking fun at the sight of the little kayak on the back of my truck, but I guess I can see where he's coming from.

The 26 foot Chaparral was a nice e-Bay find now sitting in the nw-Bay. It cuts a handsome speedy profile that can deliver a nifty 60 mph from it's 300+ hp Volvo V-8. We, of course, adhered to the 45 mph limit and did not exceed the alcoholic consumption advisory.

It will get up and go which is an advantage to tame this 30 mile long Adirondack jewel of a lake, a favorite of Thomas Jefferson. While it is very smooth thru big waves at speed, it is also smooth and maneuverable at 1 mph through the narrow and shallow cut between rocky islands at Harbor Island where we anchored and swam.

I never tire of admiring the mountains that beautifully surround the lake as we proceed up through the Narrows even on a cloudy day. Did I mention this was like a summertime Christmas present.

Did some swimming at Arcady Bay, clam and snail picking when this young female Wood duck hopped on board for handouts. She was content to sit on the fantail for an extended time, very cute. Mrs Dirt had the better picture angle with her iPhone from the water view. But I captured the landing moment with shutter burst mode.

In case you missed the undercurrent of the story, it's: If you work hard you can achieve the dream.
