Hero Filming

Part A

First Filming

It is important to be prepared before you start filming. Make sure you have completed the following on the right:

The most important thing that you should remember when filming is that each member is in charge of his or her act. One person in the group is not responsible for directing, filming, and editing the film (all editing for your act must be done on your laptop to receive credit). You may assist each other but make sure that you do not do the work for another person's act. If one person's act does not look as good as the other acts...that's okay if it causes the other acts to look better. You are receiving individual grades based on acts.

    • Completed script
    • Finished storyboards
    • All shots, angles, and shots that you are filming are indicated in the script
    • Actor prep is ready

It is usually best to film your acts by location and actors. Remember that if you film an actor on more than one day, they need to wear the exact same clothes and look the same. Tell your actors not to wear clothes with large writing on the shirts, distracting colors, or big logos. Also when filming try not to focus in and show company signs/logos.Use the following guidelines when filming:Green Screen: need to film your background so when you fly you can insert your flying on the greenscreen on the background.Jumper Effect: Film the background and look at this Jumper Effect example Make sure you everyone in the group brings their printed script and completed storyboard every class until filming is finished.

For shots needing green screen you can wait and shoot those later in the week when you go to the computer lab. Remember that almost all of your special effects shots need to be shot with a tripod or the camera on something and not moving in order for the effect to work in editing. Your group does not get unlimited amount of time; you only get the time given in class so be efficient.

Keep your "bad" footage for bloopers that you will create at the end of your film during the credits. If you filmed, place the footage in the dropbox and share it with your group members so they have access to it. Organize and sort the video files by putting them into folders: One 5_6, Two 5_6, and Three 5_6 (5_6 represents the date you filmed it and the One represents Act I). Look over the footage and see if it was shot correctly (e.g. cuts, angles, master shots to meet the requirements). After filming update the Google Doc Table Script and highlight each row with yellow that you have completed filming. Do not post anything to wordpress or the spreadsheet; your Table Script will be checked for a grade.

Part B

Special Effects

PhotoFirst thing your group will do is take a photograph (head to toe) of each of your main and minor characters in their complete costume with good lighting. Then either in class or as homework, place the photos in the MF Picasa album and in the caption write what type of character they are (e.g. protagonist) and their name. Each person will receive a grade based on their effort for their character. Remember, a character cannot wear any type of school uniform shirt, sweatshirt, or jacket. Post your Picasa link to the spreadsheet.FilmingFor this filming session you will be required to film the following by the end of class:All footage needed for your After Effects special effects (e.g. freeze, duplicate, teleport) but you do not have to film the green screen flying scene yet At least one scene from each Act which you will use your visual effect (e.g. smoke)Film at least one Master Shot per Act (be prepared to direct the remaining Master Shots in future classes)

Place your footage in your dropbox and make sure it is shared with everyone. Make sure you everyone in the group brings their printed script and completed storyboard every class until filming is finished.

Part C

Master Shot FilmingEach group member filmed one master shot already. Remember each member is responsible for filming two Master Shots each, not three anymore. In this filming session, film each member's remaining Master Shots.Place your footage in your dropbox. When you are finished with the filming requirement for this checkpoint (filming your Master Shots), edit one Master Shots in your Act that you want graded with iMovie & name the file with the following format:Conflict: Back Over Shoulder ca1joe15They should be short and should not take more than 15 minutes to edit.

Post to YT & name the title the name of the category and specific shot followed by ca1213:

Conflict: Back Over Shoulder ca1213

This grade will not be a checkpoint but will be part of your project grade. If you do not get the footage from the individual who filmed that is your responsibility.

You will have one more class to film the remaining footage for your group's acts. Make sure everyone in the group brings their printed script and completed storyboard every class until the completed film is finished. As you finish filming your scenes cross out with pencil what you have finished at the end of each class on your table script.

Part DFinish Filming As a group finish any filming you need and be efficient with your time. Make sure you bring your script table and storyboards while filming in class for a possible grade. The person who filmed should place the footage in dropbox and share it with your group members so they have access to it. Organize and sort the video files by putting them into folders in your dropbox: Act I, Act II, & Act III. Import all of your clips that are for your act as Large and copy the files when you import them and name the event Act # classID. Then follow the directions below in iMovie event:

    • In your event library, click on the "x+" icon (see screenshot below) to reject your clips that you will not use. There must be some clips rejected.
    • Select the clips that are for your required action shots & cuts and mark them as favorite by clicking on the Star+ (see screenshot above). You can then filter your clips like the screenshot below and your "favorite" shots will show a green line in the event library and orange if they are being used on the timeline (see screenshots below).

Next class I will check your iMovie event to grade if you have completed this accurately.

Take a screenshot of your clips like the screenshot above (make sure there are green lines on some of the clips) in your event library in iMovie and email to Wordpress and the link to the spreadsheet.
