Short Lip Sync

Objective

To learn how to lip sync well & edit video in iMovie

Part A

Follow the directions to record your lip sync.

Part B

Using the lip sync you recorded from Part A complete the following:

Video Record

Open the old version of iMovie on your Macbook Pro and insert the original song file (the official song or quote said/sang) into a new iMovie project called Lip Sync classID.

Watch the video instructions, Part I and Part II edit your song or quote with the requirements.

Editing Requirements Use iMovie to edit the video in class; if you missed class and don't have iMovie at home you can use Windows Movie Maker.

    • Getting Started
      • Open a new project with a 16:9 aspect ratio
    • Intro (someone introducing you and your song)
      • Set a theme and use its effect at the beginning (choose the text of your choice)
      • Use capture video in iMovie (highest quality, 1024x576) and ask someone to announce a creative intro for you and your song
      • Add an iLife sound effect to add light background music to the intro
      • Adjust the levels (e.g. exposure, lightness, etc.) and change the white balance to a blue color to the intro
    • Lip Sync (you lip singing)
      • Add a title (e.g. gradient black); the title should be the name of the song, MV style text info to the first few seconds of you singing with the song name, your name, and original singer(s). See the example for exact format (all text should be about the same size).
      • Add a video effect
      • Crop and rotate one of your video clips for a short time (you can adjust just slightly or extreme) during an appropriate part of your song to add variation. Also flip your video which could also add a good effect.
      • Fade out the song
    • Ending (credits)
      • Take a creative photo (e.g. photobooth) of yourself and insert it at the end
      • Use rolling credits over your photo that include original singer, song name and album, your friend introduction, you as lip sync singer, you as the editor. Make sure your credits don't go flying by too fast so you cannot read them!
      • A creative voice over of you (e.g. humming, saying "Here are the credits") that plays during the credits
      • Add an iMovie sound effect to your closing credits
      • Add a video transition between your lip sync singing and the credits
    • Download Color_Splashes.m4v and insert 3-6 seconds of the short color flash on top of your video as a cutaway effect anywhere in your video for a color flash effect and change the opacity of the color flash so accordingly so you can see yourself.

Post

    • When finished, go to Share > Export to Disk and export it as a video file (largest size) to your desktop. Upload it to Youtube and the link to Schoology.
    • In YT the title type: #LipSync by Your Last, First Name - Song Title, Original Artist
    • Then in iMovie, go to Share > Youtube and choose the highest quality setting available. Upload the video to YT and make it either public or unlisted.

Song Practice

Before you record the visual of yourself lip singing the video, you need to practice first to make sure you have the lyrics memorized and you are in sync. Open Garageband and start a new project (cmd + n) in GarageBand and choose the Voice icon and name your project as classID Name of Song. Then play the song that you will sing on YT, iTunes, or another program while you record yourself singing it for 45-90 seconds. Make sure you stop in an appropriate place and not in the middle of the lyrics. To get help with this, watch the video tutorial by SJ (don't need to YT comment) and follow his directions to "AutoTune" your song like he does and add additional effects like he suggests (you can vary your choice of effects to choose what goes best with your song).

When you are finished, go to Share > Export to Disk > and save it as an MP3 or WAV file to your desktop. Check out David Suh's MV to hear some good AutoTunes.

Part A is optional bonus (you cannot lose points, only gain. The better it is, the more points you get. Not many points will be given if it is not creative with effort.

This can be a fun assignment but I don't want you to get carried away and spend hours of your time working on it to make it perfect. Be efficient with your time, decisive with your decisions, and do not spend more than 45min on Part A.

if you did it

or, if you did not do Part A then download any of the movie clips (choose one) or the Happy Birthday song and record yourself mouthing the quote in iMovie.

Audacity tutorial

When you are finished, take a screenshot of your audacity screen. Add any vocal effect to your recorded voice in Audacity. Then export the song as WAV to GarageBand and add at least one other voice effect of your choice. Then export the song from GarageBand as WAV or MP3.

In Posterous, post the Audacity screenshot and write the text effects you used in Audacity and GarageBand for your voice. Upload the song to posterous unless you would rather not upload your song, then just type "I'll show you my song in

and also post your video to the Short Lip Sync MF Picasa album. It may take a while to upload, so just leave it for five minutes to process and don't just upload another one. After it is finished, add the caption format: ca4joe15 Title. If you are the first one
