Working with Brushes

In this lesson, you'll learn how to do the following:

• Use the four brush types: Art, Calligraphic, Pattern, and Scatter.

• Change the brush color and adjust brush settings.

• Create new brushes from Adobe Illustrator artwork.

• Apply brushes to paths created with drawing tools.

• Use the Scribble Effect for artwork and text.

Directions

Download the data files. If the file does not let you open it in AI, then make sure the file name ends in .ai (e.g if it is lake.ai.ps, delete the .ps so it ends in .ai, which is an Illustrator file). Follow the two video tutorials Part I & Part II but read the written directions that will help you with questions you may have from the video.

Explanations to the directions:

    • To fill in the brown color of the boat, after you have drawn the outline, use the selection tool (shortcut v) and click on the outline of the boat and choose a color to fill it.
  • If you do not have the leaves brush, use any other brush of your choice & the same with calligraphy brush.
  • To change the direction of the gradient's water, click on the gradient tool (shortcut g) and double-click on the square used for the water. Then hover over the right edge of the straight gradient line and it will allow you to rotate it vertically.
  • If you are not able to use the scribble effect for the grass, make sure you have chosen the top stylize option on the menu since there are two listed (one is for Illustrator and the other for Photoshop).
  • If you are not able to use the yellow brush stroke as a symbol, create your own yellow brush stroke that looks similar.
  • For the artwork border, after you make a square, make sure you then click on the pattern brush you made to apply it.
  • When it tells you to crop, use the artboards tool (shift + o) to crop it and then File > Export as JPEG and click the "Use Artboards" checkbox before you hit save.

Then open your panda and bamboo tutorial work of art and add the brushed tree with the leaves of your choice, water (either a lake, river, or waterfall), boat, grass, and a new border of your choice from the tutorial. Make sure you create your own and not use the ones from the tutorial but they can look similar. Insert your grunge signature photo when you are finished on the left or right corner. Then post completed JPG in full quality to Schoology. Later in next class you will print this image in color with normal printer paper at school.
