DJ

Overview

It takes a lot of practice and technique to properly remix a song. Remixing and understanding how audio works and the effects that you can evoke is a good tool to have when creating projects for other classes, sports, and clubs. It will also help you become more familiar with how audio works in preparation for your future MV. The song remix below is one of the most famous.

Virtual DJ

Go to http://download.cnet.com and search for Virtual DJ. It should be a free download and it will allow us to use the free 20 day trial (PC & Mac compatible). If your school macbook does not allow you to download and install it because you need an admin password, try another computer or go to a friend's house. Create a quality 3-4 minute remix. If your remix is good, I will use it for volleyball warmups before home games and give you a SP but make sure the lyrics are clean and can be played for a general audience.

One of the best mixes. By David Suh.

Requirements

Experiment with the tools first so you are familiar with the features before you record. If you just record random song mixes, you will not get much of any extra credit. Do not use more than 30 seconds of any one song. At a minimum, use the following features:

    • Scratching
    • Speed up and slow down the speed of the song
    • Use the volume controls to fade in/out songs back-to-back
    • Use various parts of songs, not just the beginning of songs
    • Use at least one sound effect
    • Record at least three of your own samplers (see the sampler tab)
    • Do not use inappropriate lyrics of any kind
    • Must watch the video and follow the requirements in it

Recording

When you record the audio of your DJ mix, use one of the Screencast Options which captures video of your screen and to show how you created your DJ mix. Use Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, etc. to transfer your MP3 song (use the similar method you used when creating your practice lip sync) and combine the audio and video of your remix into a video/audio of your song. Finally, upload the video to your class YouTube account and give it the title: DJ Remix by Your Name (mfca).

Post

    • Post the YT link to posterous as well as attach the audio file of the song to your posterous with it.
    • Email the link to your posterous and paste the link into spreadsheet
    • Also, post a video (not a screenshot) to the correct MF Picasa album; in the caption write By Your Name classID, Title (e.g. By David Suh ca0david14, "Bad Day")
