Plain English
In these tutorials you have watch some "In Plain English" YT videos that demonstrate in a very simple and physical way how things work using paper cutouts. Signup for ideas (give two and I will choose one) and you will begin making it next week.
- Then watch the two-part video (one, two) about how a computer works and add to your current notes while creating new ones for new parts introduced.
- Take photos of your notes and post to your posterous and the link to the tutorial spreadsheet.
- B) Watch the vintage computer video in class to understand better how the computer works. It is amazing that the core process of how a computer works is very similar, just faster and smaller. Now watch the student tour video to show today's modern computer. Add helpful notes to your notes from the previous one.
- Go to the question doc (if you do not have access to the doc, request from Christian or a friend) and write five good, creative questions from everything you learned along with the answers. Do not write simple questions like "What stores temporary memory?" This is an obvious and very important question. Write questions that make you think and have to apply what you learned: "If you try to open a program on your computer and it takes a long time, which computer part is most likely causing the problem?" Answer: RAM -- You are not allowed to use anyone's same or very similar questions.
- Take photos of your new notes from the computer process and also a screenshot of your five questions and post to your posterous and the link to the tutorial spreadsheet.
- Process
- Read the computer process, whic h is very important to understand, and add to your notes. Then go to http://upload.youtube.com/my_videos_upload and select "Record form webcam"
- Explain the process when th e computer saves permanent data to your hard drive compared to RAM storing temporary data. Explain the parts as you mention them (e.g. RAM, processor, hard drive)Then, in the same recording, explain when you push the power switch, what exactly happens. Include the power switch, power cables, power to the motherboard, BIOS in the RAM, operating system (OS) startup, etc. ResourceGo to the question doc (if you do not have access to the doc, request from Christian or a friend) and write five good, creative questions from everything you learned along with the answers. - Follow the directions for this higher rated assignment.
- Mac
- View all the links and videos on the History of Mac (the hour video is optional). Take notes in your CA book while you watch the videos and view the graphics. Then on the Question Doc, write three important questions and answers. For your fourth and last question, write a critical thinking problem that causes you to think and try to figure out the answer while applying what you have learned. Write these four questions for each video and graphic. Take a screenshot of your questions and post to posterous.

- Watch the video on Speed Test starting at 3:35 (don't forget to comment) and then follow the directions to create a browser page with a partner.
- Startup Edits
- Follow Now that you have completed the draft of your web startup page/video you can make edits and create your final. I should have given you video feedback that you can work on. If you do not want to edit your page and video then just email me and I will give you a grade.
- For your webpage, make sure that your photos are changed to S (small format and wrapped to the right. Also, you can't copy and paste text from a Word or Google Doc to the website because the text format will not match the rest of the site. To fix this, copy your text and paste it into textedit (mac) and go to Format > Make Plain and paste your text here and then copy the text from textedit to the webpage. If you are using a PC you can use notepad.
- When you give the screencast demonstration of your application, do not cover things that a majority of students already know. Highlight features that most don't know or nontrational ways you can use it. Make sure your video is not over five minutes and remember, you need to make them creative and narrate with energy while adding humor.
- Post to posterous a link to the page you created for the application and ask a classmate to check all the format of the page (video size, photos, line breaks, etc) and make comments on any needed changes. I will be checking their comments because I want to make sure they are telling you how to correct your mistakes. Also ask them to watch your video and request ways to improve the video. Ask them which parts if any need to be cut or improved because they lose interest. Make sure they comment by the due date on the calendar for this part.
- After you receive their comments and mine, make needed changes. The updated video and page is due on Monday, July 25 by midnight.
- Network Signup
- Read the directions so that you understand the assignment. Watch the six-video Network Playlist and then sign up for your topic. In posterous, write 2-3 sentences describing what your part is about and what it is (e.g. Part 3 0:00-3:33). In the next tutorial you will create it.

- Network Check
- Put your Network video in a folder called your classID in your dropbox folder and share it with ca0chrisp14@gmail.com. To do this, log in online to your dropbox and select that folder and share it. Then go to the Network Doc and make sure your updated summary text is there; take a screenshot of it. Also, go to your dropbox folder and take a screenshot of your shared folder which should have three people on it like the example. Post the screenshots to posterous.Also, if they are not already, upload all of the videos you have made so far this quarter and upload them to your YT account and post the YT links to the YT assignment/tut columns. Email me three things related to computers that you would still like to learn about.
