Guy Portrait

Camera Settings for Portrait important if using a DSLR

Take your photos in Manual or Aperture priority mode

    • Lowest number aperture (e.g. 2.8 or as low as your lens allows)
    • Lowest number ISO (e.g. 100 or 200)
  • Adjust your shutter speed to get the right lighting you need; just make sure you your hand and subject is steady and does not give a blur effect

Formal Photo of a Guy

    • Have the guy wear a black (dark) jacket or suit coat; try to incorporate a prop of some kind
    • The photo should be taken in landscape showing their waist up either sitting down or standing up.
    • Shoot the pose from a couple different angles but don't have the subject look at the camera
    • Have the guy on the left side of the photograph covering one third of the photo using vertical rule of thirds like the image below
    • Focus the red focus dot in the viewfinder on the guy's face so it is in focus, press half way on the button until it focuses, then shift the camera to the right or left so that the guy's position is on one thirds vertical of the photograph as best as possible and white space taking up the other two thirds. You can cut part of his right shoulder off. You do not need a focal point rule of third.
    • Important: Have your main light source at right and front right so it casts shadows on the left side of the photograph
    • Have the photo overexposed so that the background is white and the overall photo is lighter but have the main light source there is high contrast (shadow) on the face.
