DM Filming Techniques

Filming Techniques

Each clip should be about 3 seconds long or less.

    • Time Lapse (example)
    • Try to place your phone at a creative angle on something so that it does not move or walk around holding it at eye level for at least two minutes
    • Insert Cut
    • Film a wide subject shot and then cut to a closer shot (e.g. medium shot) of the same subject and angle
    • Rack Focus (example)
    • Focus on a foreground subject and then focus it to a background subject (not more than one time)
    • Foreground Slider Shot (example)
    • Film three different locations from various angles and views of different subjects moving the camera horizontally or diagonally while keeping it steady and smooth. This is not a horizontal pan but instead, you walk sideways while filming.
    • Whip (example)
      • Watch the whip filming tutorial but only filming instructions part and stop it when the student starts to edit. Then go out and film both a horizontal whip and a vertical whip. Then edit this effect in iMovie for now and can use a cross fade transition to make it look smoother if needed. Later for your travel video you will use Premiere.
    • Speed Transition
      • Film an action scene of something or someone moving (be creative) and then edit them going from Slow > Fast > Slow (example). You can change it from Normal > Slow > Normal or any other combination.
    • Split Transition
      • Use an object match cut with a horizontal pan to change the scene in a creative way. You may not zoom in or move the camera forward to fill the frame with the object match cut; must use the horizontal pan (example 1 & example 2).

Cutting Effects

    • Watch the 30 second video montage of the sports' clips for the commercial and continue watching and learn how to create the following cuts
    • Double Cutting (soccer/runner) & Time Remap (jumper) combined
    • Time Repeat (football)
    • Butterfly Cut (stairs)
