Photograph

Take any final cube photos if needed. Upload all of these new photos to your original Picasa Cube Draft album. Add captions for all the photos by giving each cube photo topic a name (example below Crane, Bird, Grasshopper, & Bug) and name each photo the title and a number (e.g. Crane #1, Crane #2, Crane #3). For your proof photo, add a caption that tells the location, an estimated time of the photo, and anyone who was with you while you took the photo. Add the text Try2 at the beginning of all the captions of your new photos.

Have any past or current CA student comment on your new photos and give you advise on which final four photos you should choose out of all your photos. It would also be wise to ask the teacher for advise.

After you choose your final four cube photos, copy them to your Picasa album named Four Cube Photos. In the caption, give the photo a creative title and the location (e.g. Light Storm: Side Street in Itaewon). In the comment write the composition:

FP:

RULE:

ANGLE:

SHOT:

LIGHT:

DEPTH:

Cube

It is very important to start planning on how and when to build your cube. Your photos that you will be printing in the future will be 6 inches vertically and 4 inches horizontally. You should have a 1in border so make each of the four sides of your cube 7in by 5in. Also make a top and bottom. Use black materials to build your cube and use black tape to neatly secure the sides together.

If you complete your cube and bring it to AP on Nov 25th, you will get a coupon and the three best design/neat cube will get a second coupon on Monday.

Post

Take a screenshot of your final cube photos in Picasa and post to posterous and write a couple sentences of what you did to work on planning, purchasing materials, and/or building your cube. Later, on another due date, you will need to finish building your cube and attach your photos to it.

Instructions

    1. In class, edit your final four cube photos in PS. Be sure they all have a similar look and feel. Download the Photoshop Cube Template
    2. or
    3. open PS and create a new size document, 6 inches high and 4 inches long, 300 resolution, RGB. On the keyboard press cmd + r to show your rulers. Change your preferences to inches shown on the screenshot on the right.
  1. Your photos have to be the larger image files since you will be printing them. The minimum file size of the photo should be 1mb or larger. If it is less than that, it may not print clear. Open your four photos and insert them (cmd + a, then cmd + c, then go to your PS document and press cmd + v to paste your photos in) into your document as different layers; give each layer a title according to the subject of the photo (e.g. jumping dog). Cmd + t & transform your photo to fit into the 6x4 document. When you are editing one photo, hide the other photos layer. Move and resize only at the corners of the photo to keep the same ratio (important). Make sure the original photo is not too small and you have to make it much bigger...it will print pixelated. When you position your photo on the 4x6 PS document, keep in mind composition and use the guidelines to help you position the photo. When you are finished editing each photo, save it as a JPG full quality. It will only save what appears on the document. If you have hidden layers, they will not show on the JPG photo, which is what you want. It is important that these photos are saved well because they will be used to print. Use the final name classIDcube1, classIDcube2, classIDcube3, & classIDcube4 Self-Portrait
    1. Now go to your self-portrait (examples) photos (past directions) and after reading your comments and thinking about which one to choose, open your top choice in the same PS document as a new layer (hide the other layers). If you downloaded and used the PS template, unhide the layer Black Bottom Rectangle or add a two inch tall black rectangle across the bottom of the document; use the rulers at the top and right side to see size. Type your name in the black rectangle in the font/color of your choice, preferably a script or handwriting font. Resize and move the photo so it fits towards the top of the document, 4 inch by 4 inch.Edit the self-portrait exposure and look according to what you prefer. This photo will be the top of your photo cube.Save the photo (with the rectangle) as a JPEG full quality and name it classIDcube0.
  1. Title Photo
    1. Choose three coordinating colors to work with that match and go well together. Spin the color wheel and find three colors that coordinate well together. Click on the hold check-box if you see a color you like and click spin again. Take a screenshot of the three colors and insert it into your PS document. Change the background to a new solid color and select the color eye-dropper tool (shortcut i) and select one of the colors from the color wheel screenshot. Use the other two colors for the text. You can use black or white as one of your three colors. Do not use more than three.Keep the 2inch black high rectangle at the bottom of your document. Type a creative title for your cube topic and your name (e.g. Trees from Down Under, Photographed by Marcy Chang) above the black rectangle. For the text, "By Your Name," choose not to fill it and use one of your three colors and stroke it. Insert all the text layers in the Title folder layer in your PS like the example on the right. Make sure the font is easy to read in color, size, and font choice since it will be 4in by 4in and used as the bottom of your cube. Then write a one sentence description of your photo cube topic (e.g. Photos taken ob biblicists at sunset around the Han River in Seoul). When you type your text, imagine there are .25 inch guides around the edges (you don't have to place them). This is your text boundary and no text should go outside of it and close to the edge.If you want to make a more elaborate title photo like this example, you can, but I don't suggest it. Just make a simple but good-looking one like this one and get it done so you can move on.
    2. Save the photo (with the black rectangle) as a JPEG full quality and name it classIDcube
    3. Upload the JPG full quality title, self-portrait, and four final cube photos the MF Final Cube Photo album. Upload them in this order (if they don't go into this order, you can ask me in class on Dec 5/6 and you can arrange them with my account album):
    4. a. Your title photo
    5. b. Your self-portrait
    6. c. Your best cube photo
    7. d. Second best cube photo
    8. e. Third best
    9. f. Fourth best
    10. In the captions of all six photos, write your classID. Also in the captions (since it won't let you write comments) of your last four photos, write a description of where you took it and anything that is helpful or interesting for me to know about how you took the photo. This is where I will be grading your cube photos.
    11. Also in the caption of the last four photos, write the composition topics (e.g. FP, SHOT, ANGLE, etc).
    12. On the spreadsheet, post the Picasa link to your cube title, which begins the group of your cube photos. MF Final Cube Photo album
    13. Also, email your photos to your posterous but do not post the link to the spreadsheet.
    14. I will download all the cube photos from the MF Picasa album and have one student print these at a photo place for cheap and you can pay them back. Make sure each of the photos is named correctly and is 1mb in size or larger. When they come back, you can attach them to your black cubes.
    15. Finished!

Include a small thumbnail of each topic photo and write a description next to it (e.g. location, what it is, why you took it

On a new layer above all the other layers, insert your signature photo in the bottom right or left corner so it is not too distracting.(e)

Upload your self-portrait photo, without the black rectangle with your name, only your photo, to the MF Picasa Self-Portrait
