Studio Portraits

Objective

To apply the the principles learned on how to take portrait photographs.

Part A (take photos)

After you have finished viewing and taking notes from a previous assignment about portraits, you will apply what you have learned and take portrait photos.

You will complete this assignment in class using the lighting equipment in the back of the HS lab. If you are absent or taking the course during summer online, complete it on your own outside and get your own subjects.

You will need to take a photo of any boy or girl but if another student uses the same person as their subject, make sure you dress them differently with different props . They and as the photographer. be sure to give verbal instructions on how to pose and you may need to physically show the subject how you want them to pose. Take at least a couple photos of each pose in case they close their eyes etc.

When you are finished take a proof photo on self-timer or have someone take it for you with the guy and girl who were your subjects. You can take the proof shot with the DSLR or your own camera/phone.

Camera Settings for Portrait important if using a DSLR

Take your photos in Manual or Aperture priority mode

    • Lowest number aperture (e.g. 2.8 or as low as your lens allows)
    • Lowest number ISO (e.g. 100 or 200)
  • Adjust your shutter speed to get the right lighting you need; just make sure you your hand and subject is steady and does not give a blur effect

The three directions are for taking directions only. Later in another checkpoint you will follow directions to edit the photos you have taken.

Three Portraits

      1. Photo of a girl (directions)
    1. Photo of a Guy (directions)
      1. Expressive Self-Portrait (directions)

Post all of your photos that you took (both good and bad so we can see your progression) to your Picasa in an album named Portraits; do not edit any photos during this checkpoint. Make sure you change the album properties to Public because the default setting is private. Post the Picasa link to the spreadsheet. Also take a screenshot of your photos in the Picasa album and email to your Posterous.

By the end of the day have one CA student (current or past) make short comments on the three photos that would be best. Then, add a caption to the top photos chosen. Write the following captions for one photo each so I can see which ones you chose:

    1. Girl Portrait
    2. Guy Portrait
    3. Expressive
  • In the comment of each of the chosen photos, write the camera settings you used for the following:ISO
  • Aperture
    • and Shutter Speed

You can find them in Picasa in the top right of your photo.
