Objective
To apply camera shots (subject shots & action shots) & angles previously learned.
Part A
Watch the DirectTV commercials. Then later you will create your own 30-second commercial (total final running time must be between 26-34 seconds) following a similar cause and effect pattern of your own. Take a screenshot of which scene is your favorite.
You will choose a PSA (public service announcement) as the subject of your cause and effect events; see this list for ideas and sign up for one by leaving a comment. Only one person per topic.
Choose six short shots that you will use like the example to show a series of cause and effect events. The shots must be short (average about four seconds per clip) and you must use the specific SS, A, & AS order when you shoot your clips as listed below.
Key
SS: Subject Shots
A: Angles
AS: Action Shots
In terms of the SS, it only has to start at that point but you can zoom in/our or adjust if needed. Example: #4 You start your shot with a Medium shot but as the subject does a head on shot and walks to the camera it will turn into a close up shot.So for your first video clip you will film, it will be an extreme long shot that is eye line and you will add a horizontal pan to it.Idea
Before you start filming, you need to make sure you have a good idea. Make sure that your idea is manageable and easy to film short clips. Getting a creative funny idea is the most challenging part so make sure you put time into thinking outside the box.
Email a new post to WP that includes the following (template and example below) & include the DirectTV screenshot.
Try to have as many different locations as possible while creatively linking unrelated events like the DirectTV commercials. For example, one of the commercials went from problems with their cable TV to landing in a roadside ditch with an eye patch.
When creating your ideas make sure they are realistic. For example, if you use a teacher then you must use an actual teacher...not a student. If you say they are in the hospital it should look somewhat like a hospital and not just a written sign with the words "hospital" on the door.

PSA Topic: Lock your Lockers
First narrative line of text: (e.g. "When you throw your candy wrapper on the ground, ants will crawl all over it")
Second line: When ants crawl all over your candy wrapper, they may crawl on a little boy's hand who picks up your candy wrapper"
Third line: When ants crawl on his hand, they may crawl down his pants
Fourth line: When ants crawl down his pants, he may do a crazy dance into the street
Fifth line: When a little boy dances on the sidewalk, a car accident may happen
Sixth line: When a car accident happens, it may delay your bus for hours in traffic
Conclusion: "Don't get delayed on the bus...please recycle!"
Example that lacks creativity; most of it is predictable & needs more humor:
Title: 5 minute difference
PSA Topic: Don't wake up late
First line: When you wake up late, you forget to eat breakfast.
Second line: When you forget to eat your breakfast, you go and eat somewhere really quickly.
Third line: If you go eat somewhere really quickly, you get a stomachache.
Fourth line: If you get a stomachache, you go to the hospital.
Fifth line: If you go to the hospital, they will assign you medicine from the pharmacy.
Sixth line: If you go to the pharmacy, then you will get your medicine
Conclusion: Medicine costs money, waking up early is for free
Comment
When you are finished and it is posted on WP, have a past or present CA student read your idea and make a WP comment on at least three of the lines how to improve it to make it flow better and add even more humor. Sometimes it is funny to you when you write your idea but is not funny or make sense. You must accept & adjust your idea to include at least one of their suggestions. The comment is required to receive credit.
Part B
Shoot
After you get your feedback comments you are ready to film. Film all or at least almost all of your short little clips. When you film, remember you will be using the ambiance noise but there should be no speaking parts but simple loud phrases like "Hey!" or background sounds are okay. Make sure you have good lighting and composition. Do not film at night
If you film on separate days (not recommended), make sure the main actor has the same clothes, hair, and style. You must film all your shots which means you will not be acting in it but you can ask a classmate, friend, or family member.
When you film, you must film each line of your story idea according to the specific SS, AA, and AS indicated below:
When finished, move them to your Dropbox and take a screenshot of the thumbnails. Then import them into iMovie and make sure the videos look good (audio, good lighting, etc). In the next assignment, you will edit your clips; check the calendar when you will need to have this completed.
Part C
When finished filming, open and edit them in iMovie. Save the file in the following format: 1112ca4joe15 Your Topic. Use iMovie's narration feature to narrate the scenes while keeping the background noise in your clips but don't have it be too distracting to the narration. Narrate your clips in a serious voice like the DirectTV commercial above but vary your tone at times to make it entertaining. Do not use sound effects.
Start your video with your first clip (establishing shot). Edit your clips so that they are short and quick and the storyline is fast-moving. After your last clip, add the black "Centered" title (see examples on the right) with white default font and type only the name of your topic (e.g. Stop Racism, Recycle, Save Water). Narrate this text slide in this format when you record: "Don't get delayed on the bus...please recycle."
Export your video in Large quality and upload it to your Vimeo account (title it: Don't get delayed on the bus...please recycle) and post the link to WP
Also post it to the MF Picasa album and the link to the spreadsheet.
Also save to your dropbox (later when you come to class you will be asked to upload it...more directions will be given on how to upload). In the caption, write your classID and the PSA topic.
