iMovie

OverviewYou probably already "know" or have used iMovie but maybe you just taught yourself. We will be using iMovie a lot, especially the advanced features and you will probably learn a lot of new tools in this advanced iMovie tutorial. Make sure you take good notes for a future quiz and will have to use most of these tools later in the quarter for specific video assignments.Part AOpen iMovie on your iMac and create a new iMovie project with the default settings and title it ca4joe15 iMovie Tutorial. Download all the video files, which you will need for Part A. Then go to File > Import > Movies and import all of the video files as original size in the folder you downloaded. When you work on this tutorial, open the video on the left side and iMovie on the right side like the example below.

Watch the YT video tutorial (Don't forget that you need to click on the "Like" YT button if you want to get full credit) and you will be following the exact directions from the video with the same video clips so you can practice the iMovie tools.

When you are finished, go back to the title in the first clip "Happy Hallway" and add "Happy Hallway by Your Name." Also, shorten the headphones clip so it is only 2 seconds.

In the rolling credits add Kenny Sung as Male Actor, Mr. Monkey as Bobble Head Monkey, and Video Editor as Your Name like the example below:

View the example video to see if yours matches about the same.

Go to Export to Youtube and export as Large and public. Name it iMovie Tutorial A ca4joe15 and email the YT link to WordPress and also resize your project timeline to fill most of the screen and take a screenshot like the one below to include in your WordPress post. The category for WordPress is [category:tutVideo]. Post the YT link to the spreadsheet. Then go on to the next part of the tutorial.

Part B

Now create a new iMovie but this time use your MacBook and name it iMovie Tutorial B.Download If you sit on the side of the classroom by the mountain (Hyatt), use this Download or If you sit on the side of the classroom near the English classrooms, use this Download to get the the iMovie files. They are divided into two sides so that they download faster but they are the same files but in different download locations. If you are not sure which one, either is fine since they are the same files.CreateChoose about 5-8 clips from the downloaded video clips that you imported into iMovie to place into your timeline. You may choose any of the clips and put them in the order that you choose to tell a shallow story with storyline progression. When you place them on the timeline, use the various place tools you learned to insert the clips: replace, replace from start, replace from end, & replace at playhead. Remember, to get these options you need to go to iMovie > Preferences > Enable Advanced Settings and then take a clip from your event and place it on top of a clip on your timeline.

    1. Detach all the audio and delete it from all your movie clips
    2. On the first clip that you choose, create your own title (you can choose which type of title) and include By Your Name on the first video clip and align it either on the left or right. Choose a color that contrasts from the background and take out any text outline. Allow the title to stay long enough on the screen so that the audience can read it.
    3. Apply one wipe Transition after the first clip and a fade to black after the last video clip.
    4. Apply one appropriate Video effect to one clip (e.g. raster, aged film)
    5. Change the first video clip's video appearance (go to video adjustment and modify the exposure, brightness, contrast, & saturation) to your satisfaction
    6. Cutaway (insert and modify the clip adjustment to a manual cutaway fade and adjust the opacity so that you can see both videos together with one on top)
    7. Record narration on the first couple of clips to narrate the setting and scenario of the storyline. You can record this in the classroom and it is okay if it is noisy in the room.
    8. Record a short and quick video clip of yourself in from the record feature in iMovie (can be a simple clip at your desk) and insert it into your timeline story; try to make the clip make sense with your storyline
    9. Apply one Picture-in-picture
    10. Speed (adjust one clip, or part of one, to be slow*, one fast*, and one to be reversed*)
    11. Go and add one background audio clip from the iMovie audio at the beginning to set the mood (e.g. show suspense, happiness, conflict, etc). You can choose how long the clip runs.
    12. Then add an iMovie sound effects to show emphasis during an action in your video storyline.
  1. Insert scrolling Credits (who filmed it, actors, editor); make sure the credits are slow enough to read the names
  2. Green screen (download SpinninClips.m4v and insert it in the rolling credits at the end and apply the fade to black
  3. Post
    1. Export the video as Large from iMovie to your YT and save it as Your Title - iMovie Tutorial. The email subject tag for WordPress is [category:tutVideo]. Post the link to your WordPress and the YT link to the spreadsheet.
