Product Design

Checkpoints

  1. Begin
    1. Watch the short video overview & monolog about Graphic Design. Then create your product Idea.
  2. Elaborate
    1. Now you will elaborate on the product that was approved by Mr. Heil in class. If you want to choose a new product...it is okay. You need to choose a product that you have an interest in. Focus more on the design and look of the product instead of the function. For example, if you are designing new headphones, I am more interested in the style and how they look versus the new technology of what they can do. The design does not have to be super detailed and elaborate but don't make it too simple.
    2. Draw three different versions of the one product that was approved in your CA book. If your product is headphones, draw three different designs of the same pair of headphones but keep the features (the ability and what it can do) the same. It is okay if you are not good at drawing, just do your best and color them.
    3. After you have finished your drawings in your CA book, email a new post to posterous with the following (copy and answer):
        • What creative name would you give your product?
        • (later you will be making a logo and business card with this name)
        • What age group do you want to target with your product?
        • Which two companies do you think would be your top competitors?
  3. Vector Product Drawing
    1. Follow the video instructions (don't forget to always comment on MF YT videos) to create your product in AI. Do not spend more than an hour creating it. After an hour, just post what you have and you can complete the rest next time for homework. If you start drawing your product and it becomes too difficult, you can change your product but email Mr. Heil a drawing of your new product to get it approved first.
    2. When you are finished, post the file and a screenshot of your product in AI to your posterous and the link to the spreadsheet.
  4. Product Examples
    1. View the product packaging in Student Showcase. When you get to the bottom of the page, click on older entries and scan through 3-4 pages and find your favorite product/packaging. Then go to that product and at the bottom of the page, leave a comment. Use your class email, about.me website address (e.g. about.me/ca4joe15). In your comment, be specific on what you like about it (e.g. colors, font, innovative, design). Take a screenshot of your comment and a screenshot of the product and post to your posterous.
  5. Innovative Product
    1. Take a look at http://www.yankodesign.com/ & http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/ and browse through some of the new innovative products. Now search other websites for a new cool product design with a cool feature and post a screenshot of the image to posterous along with a link to the article. (MF Picasa)
    2. Finish Vector Product Drawing
    3. Ask a classmate to comment on your previous checkpoint where you had to draw your product in AI. Ask them to give you ideas on how to improve the look and design.
    4. Made needed changes to your original AI drawing to improve it and finish it. Post a screenshot of it, a screenshot of your AI drawing from the previous checkpoint, & the latest AI file.
  6. Name & Font
    1. Follow the directions.
  7. Font Colors
    1. Checkpoint 8 Assignment for CA3 only
    2. Checkpoint 8 Assignment for CA6 only
  8. Logo Ideas
    1. Follow the directions

Design RSS

Last semester you followed the directions to create an RSS blogspot. Now, add three websites (RSS) to your Google Reader and tag them as Design when you organize the sites in Reader. Use two sites mentioned in one of the lists below and one that you found.

Graphic Design Blog List

Up-and-Coming Design Blogs

Web Design Blogs

Read through the design posts and publish an interesting article: click "Send to" at the bottom of the article in Google Reader and choose your new rss Blogger you made. Publish it and then view it online and write a comment on it in your RSS Blogger on your views and why it was interesting. I may ask randomly for students to share these for the class. Then make sure anyone who is also taking Design class comments after you on what they think of your blog article and what is interesting about it.

Post the specific blogspot article you reblogged to the spreadsheet, nothing to Posterous.

Now go to the article that you reblogged on Blogger and choose Send to and choose Twitter. When you retweet the article, add #CA(class#)rss at the end (example: #CA1rss, CA5rss) and #CArss. That way, you can view everybody's articles they liked: http://twitter.com/#!/search/%23carss
