Cube Idea

You will be creating a photo cube with 4"x4" portrait-layout photos (4" height, 4" width), not a square cube...so keep this in mind in choosing your topic and taking your photos.

View past students' examples but their photos were 4x6...yours will be 4x4.

Do not choose a topic that was taken in the past (list).

When choosing your topic idea, you should meet the following:

  1. Be Specific
  2. Don't just put old buildings, be specific like the student example below:
    1. Old Buildings against Modern Buildings
      1. Living in Seoul, I've noticed not only modern skyscrapers, but also old buildings that are surrounded by the modern buildings. I'd like to take photos of the contrasting buildings to show the diversity and polarity of Seoul.
  3. Multiple Subjects but One Theme
  4. You will be needing four photos that follow the same idea/theme of your cube. The subject should be different to show diversity. For example, if your topic is dogs that wear strange clothes...don't just photograph the same dog but it should be different dogs with different clothing.
  5. Be Creative!
  6. This one is really important. Think outside the box and be different. The creativity of your idea and photos will be part of your future final grade.
  7. Portrait
  8. When choosing your subject, keep in mind that all your photos will be 4" long and 4" high, which is a square.

After much thought and research, choose three unique ideas you have for a specific topic or theme for your photo cube and post them to posterous (#1 being the idea you think is best, #2 second best, etc).

After you have your cube idea approved by Mr. Heil via Posterous comment or email, write your cube topic and copy your paragraph description or write it if you have not written it yet in a new email post to posterous.

Example:

Old Buildings against Modern Buildings

Living in Seoul, I've noticed not only modern skyscrapers, but also old buildings that are surrounded by the modern buildings. I'd like to take photos of the contrasting buildings to show the diversity and polarity of Seoul.

Then write six ideas (number them) for the four photos that will go on your cube. Remember to have different subjects and use your creativity within the same specific photo topic you chose.

For each of your photo ideas, write down the following details to help you plan when to take them:

    • Location (Itaewon)
    • Time of day (~6pm Golden Hour)
    • Camera (you will use) (Sony Cybershot 400x)

They have to be specific. You cannot just write, lights at night. You would have to be specific: streaking car lights on the road. Also, the more unique and creative the topic...the better!

Ask a friend to comment on your ideas in posterous and leave a comment telling you which one is best in their opinion (before the due date of this checkpoint). Post your posterous link to the spreadsheet & write your topic on the checkpoint spreadsheet and post the posterous link as well showing the comments. Make sure you do not take anyone's idea since two people cannot have the same idea.. I will then comment on it; you must get an approval from me before you start shooting. There is usually a 50% approval rate the first time around.

do not do the following:

After I approve your photo cube topic, fill out this form.

Creative Topics

I would also type out the descriptions of your three ideas and email me, in advance, and ask me my opinion because I usually find that only about 50% of ideas would work well.
